Results Reflect Strong Interest in Hardware Intrinsic Security to Prevent Counterfeiting, Cloning and Theft-of-Service
San Jose, Calif. (October 25, 2010) – The Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA), an organization focused on accelerating the growth of the global semiconductor industry, and the HIS Initiative, aforum for educational activities regarding a new hardware security approach known as hardware intrinsic security (HIS), jointly announce the completion of a global study focused on secret key storage. Approximately 60 semiconductor company personnel involved in the design of integrated circuits responded to the HIS Usage Survey about their needs and perceptions of secret key storage and HIS.
A summary of the results includes:
“The results of the study show that there is an interest in HIS in a number of important markets beyond smart cards and military/aerospace, such as networking, telecom and industrial,” noted
Pim Tuyls, CEO of Intrinsic-ID, sponsor of the HIS Initiative. “Respondents indicate that beyond secure key storage one of the main reasons they’re interested in hardware security is for unique identification of a specific device, which is something that HIS uniquely provides.”
The HIS Usage Survey was delivered online to fabless companies worldwide and completed in August 2010. A full report is available atwww.gsaglobal.org and www.hisinitiative.org.
About GSA:
GSA’s mission is to accelerate the growth and increase the return on invested capital of the global semiconductor industry by fostering a more effective fabless ecosystem through collaboration, integration and innovation. It addresses the challenges within the supply chain including IP, EDA/design, wafer manufacturing, test and packaging to enable industry-wide solutions. Providing a platform for meaningful global collaboration, the Alliance identifies and articulates market opportunities, encourages and supports entrepreneurship, and provides members with comprehensive and unique market intelligence. Members include companies throughout the supply chain representing 25 countries across the globe. http://www.gsaglobal.org
About the HIS Initiative:
The HIS Initiative provides a forum for educational activities regarding a new hardware security approach, known as hardware intrinsic security (HIS). HIS technology provides a new level of hardware security utilizing the inherent uniqueness in each and every silicon chip. The goals of the Initiative are to validate the HIS approach by industry leaders, increase the education available, and reduce the barriers to adoption of HIS solutions. Members, which span the semiconductor ecosystem, include: Cisco Systems, imec, Intrinsic-ID, Irdeto, NXP, SiVenture, Synopsys and TSMC. To find out more, please visit www.hisinitiative.org.
