Intrinsic ID Joins Wi-SUN Alliance – Device Authentication for Securing Smart-Grid Devices Connected by the IoT

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Oct. 3, 2017 – Intrinsic ID, the world’s leading provider of digital authentication technology for Internet of Things security and embedded applications, announced today it is now a member of the Wi-SUN Alliance, a global industry alliance promoting interoperable wireless standards based solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT). Member companies include Analog Devices, Cisco, Itron, Landis+Gyr, Murata, NXP and Renesas.

“Infrastructure networks such as utility smart grids continue to become connected via the Internet of Things, which is vastly increasing the number of devices – i.e. smart meters – that require utility providers to ensure their security. This expansion gives rise to new security threats, and securing against these threats is of vital importance,” said Pim Tuyls, Intrinsic ID chief executive officer. “I am very pleased Intrinsic ID is now part of the Wi-SUN Alliance, and anticipate working with fellow member organizations to bring the necessary level of device security to utilities and the growing number of meters their customers utilize.”

The Wi-SUN Alliance’s charter to accelerate smart-grid implementation requires secure IoT devices. Intrinsic ID offers a range of products for securing IoT endpoints, with technology for key creation, key provisioning and device authentication. Intrinsic ID’s product portfolio has followed a logical progression, building on key creation and key provisioning rooted in the transistor level, and working in alignment with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Strategic Principles for Securing the Internet of Things (IoT), Version 1.0, announced in 2016.

Intrinsic ID’s array of products range from the creation of device-unique root keys to leveraging those device keys for encryption and authentication. Products for key creation, key wrapping and key management include BROADKEY and QUIDDIKEY. These create the basis for unique device identities, and hence the platform for all our other products and almost all security primitives. Key provisioning is accomplished via CITADEL. SPARTAN, announced earlier this year, offers authentication, both entity authentication and data authentication.

Intrinsic ID is demonstrating its device authentication technology during the European Utility Week conference, which is open today through October 5 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The conference and accompanying exhibits is a venue for representatives from utilities, network operators, vendors, consultants, startups and system integrators to see current offerings across the energy value chain. The Intrinsic ID team will demonstrate the use of BROADKEY – a secure key management software module for IoT security – to generate an unclonable device-unique identity for a smart meter, securing it with hardware-based authentication. BROADKEY is designed to enable secure generation of multiple cryptographic keys of various lengths. It can be implemented on virtually all MCUs, sensors and flash devices; is consistent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s strategic principles for IoT; offers a low-cost software footprint that fits into resource-constrained devices; and enables provisioning of user keys at any point in the supply chain.

Intrinsic ID will exhibit at European Utility Week with Renesas in Hall 1, Stand 1L54.

About Intrinsic ID
Intrinsic ID is the world’s leading digital authentication company for the Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded applications. It is the inventor of SRAM Physical Unclonable Function, or SRAM PUF, leveraging manufacturing variations in semiconductors to create unique IDs and keys to authenticate chips, data, devices and systems. Through its flexibility, scalability and low implementation cost, Intrinsic ID products address the security needs of the fast-growing IoT market. Its solutions are used to validate payment systems, secure connectivity, authenticate sensors, and protect sensitive government and military data and systems. Intrinsic ID’s award recognition includes the EU 2016 Innovation Radar Prize, which honors high-potential innovations and innovators in EU-funded research. Intrinsic ID’s SRAM PUF technology has been proven in millions of devices and in products that have passed certification by Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL6+), EMVCo, Visa and multiple governments.
