Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) provide flexible, lower-cost solutions for markets with limited production needs, or where the need for updatable circuits is particularly high, such as aerospace and defense and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. These same markets often deploy products into extreme environments in terms of temperature, humidity, voltage, and aging, etc. Additionally, these markets have high requirements for security, as the devices are often deployed in highly sensitive military, aerospace, and secure-computing applications.

FPGA companies, particularly those addressing the aerospace and defense market, have undertaken great effort to build in security by design. Securing the FPGA bitstream, which contains all of the user configuration data for a device, has been the focus for most security efforts. However, users have an additional need to create and manage keys for purposes beyond securing the bitstream.

While Intrinsic ID provides other PUF solutions for other FPGAs, this paper will focus on a new, “soft” PUF solution for the entire range of Xilinx FPGAs.
